Should you use boxes and shelves, you don't need to leave gaps if your
tracking system includes a field for location, and if the shelving is
marked or delineated so each space has a number or code. Aisle - bay -
shelf - depth would be an example.

Then you can just put the boxes anywhere (they don't need to be
contiguous), and note their location in the software.
