The family names are based on the term for "son of" - like "ibn" for many Arabic names, "O' " for many Irish names and "ap" for many Welsh names (although when the "ap" was dropped many Welsh then simply used the father's name as a last name - "ap" John became Jones, "ap" Robert became Roberts, "ap" William became Williams, and so forth).
Knowing this really helps when doing research or even when setting up filing systems.
