In Wales during the Dark Ages, there was a law stating that you could determine the value of a cat by lying it down on the ground, holding its tail at a right angle to its body, and pouring wheat onto the cat until it was completely covered in wheat up to the tip of its tail.

The purpose of this metric, incidentally, was to determine the proper amount to fine someone who killed or stole the cat guarding a royal granary. While this is certainly worthy goal, it seems to me that the method unreasonably assumes that the cat in question is already dead, since no live cat would put up with that kind of treatment.
