I don't want to denigrate the mighty air conditioner, but the question asks
what invention has benefited *mankind*. Air conditioning is a luxury that
today benefits a relatively small percentage of the world's people.
It may be terribly cliché, but I think it's fire, or more specifically, controlled
fire. Advances in fuels would never have occurred without first making it
useful. It provided heat, light, and a means to cook and eat foods
otherwise inedible or unhealthy.
Which is, ironically, kind of the opposite of air conditioning. :)
