I don't want to denigrate the mighty air conditioner, but the question asks 
what invention has benefited *mankind*.  Air conditioning is a luxury that 
today benefits a relatively small percentage of the world's people.



It may be terribly cliché, but I think it's fire, or more specifically, controlled 
fire.  Advances in fuels would never have occurred without first making it 
useful.  It provided heat, light, and a means to cook and eat foods 
otherwise inedible or unhealthy.



Which is, ironically, kind of the opposite of air conditioning. :)
