<Unfortunately, for some corporations, information is hardly under control and it is, at best, cumbersome to glean valuable intelligence. If IG was already a bad dream for Health Nuts, it was just about to become a nightmare.> After following the 5 steps in the article [Health Nuts] <is well on its way to being better prepared to assess, manage and control its data, all while reducing risk and increasing confidence in defensible information management processes.> What are the 5 steps? <Know Your Data And Look For Dark Data, Leverage People, Processes And Technology, Get Rid Of Stuff If Possible, Look For Easy Wins, and Document, Document, Document.>

Sound familiar? Early in my RIM career the Corporate "technology" answer to man, the universe, and everything was to take the paper and microfilm/index it into a CAR system for so-called instant access and space reduction. Reality? In order for this to work, the organization had to know what they had, where it was, whether it was worth spending the money to film it (i.e. was the retention expired), and how did they want to look for it. Fast forward to EDMS being the answer to man, the universe, and everything. Once again, in order for it to work efficiently, the organization had to know what they had, where it was, whether it was worth spending the money to scan it (i.e. was the retention expired), and how did they want to look for it. Now comes IG as the answer to etc., etc. And in order for it to work well, it is recommended that - you guessed it! - the organization had to know what they had, where it was, whether it was worth spending the money to scan it (i.e. was the retention expired), and how did they want to look for it.

It seems to me that RIM concepts and basics are still at the root to the solutions.
