Three Zone Approach to Information Governance
Learning Objective:
The Zone Approach consists of 3 Zones based on the information’s value and
risk. Unstructured records and information (emails, documents, images,
presentations, audio/video files etc.), are automatically or manually placed
into one of these 3 Zones and assigned consistent retention periods. This
process enables organizations and employees to easily manage their content
based on this legally defensible method.
After participating in this session, participants will be able to:
1. Analyze unstructured records and information and classify mixed
data streams into one of three distinct zones
2. Use this method to manage unstructured information and provide a
defensible disposition for outdated information
Facilitator’s Biography
Kevin Joerling is Director Information Governance for DST Systems. In this
position, Kevin is responsible for transitioning DST from a traditional records
management program to a comprehensive information governance program.
Prior to this position, Kevin was the Director Records and Information
Management at Health Care Service Corporation in Chicago.
Kevin has over 25 years’ experience in records management, and has spent
the last 10 years concentrating on electronic records management initiatives.
Kevin earned his Certified Records Manager (CRM) designation in 1996 and
Certified Information Professional (CIP) certification in 2012. Kevin is a
graduate from the University of Missouri with a BS in Business Administration.
