Hi everyone, so this is sort of an open-ended question, but here goes. We are implementing (hopefully later this year) a new document management/records management system. It will have the capability to manage physical records. However, in the meantime, we have more immediate need for a physical records management system (or at least a database).

My organization has never had any official tracking/indexing of our physical records (minus some high-level offsite box indexing), so I am starting from scratch on this (database and the content!). Obviously, I don't want to "purchase" any software for this since we will be bringing in a new system late this year that will do this function for us. At that point, we will migrate whatever physical records database we have into the new DM/RM system.

My open-ended question - does anyone have any advice, recommended resources, etc. for creating a "make do" physical records management database from scratch? I want to make sure that we properly configure it to serve our current tracking need as well as effectively being able to migrate into our new DM/RM system. Barcoding and high functioning circulation tools aren't a necessity at this time; our new RM/DM system should give us those capabilities to the extent that we will use them (barcoding for sure).

Thank you to anyone who has input, and please feel free to contact me offline if you prefer. I wanted to throw this out to the list serve before I started scouring the internet, RIM texts, etc.

Many thanks,

- Brett
