Hello, Listserv colleagues, catching up with a few links after a month
where I've been busy at home and at work.  As you know, Obama Presidential
Center issues are in the news from time to time.  The May 2019 issue of The
PUblic Historian, a subscription journal of the National Council on Public
History, includes four essays that its editors call a round table on
Presidential Libraries issues.  The publisher has released for temporary
public access this week, one by Bob Clark, a former National Archives
official, "In Defense of Presidential Libraries: Why the Failure to Build
an Obama Library Is Bad for Democracy."  Bob once worked at the Roosevelt
Presidential Library and Museum, the oldest in terms of establishment and
holdings.  I worked with more recent presidential records and with current
federal records (electronic and paper) so I see some issues a bit
differently.  My focus these days largely is on federal rather than
presidential records issues.

The other three essays in the "roundtable" remain paywalled, available for
viewing for pay or NCPH members.  There are many different perspectives on
these complex issues. I have access to all four essays and quote from one
by Dr. Meredith Evans in a post that looks at presidential records issues
from the perspective of laws and regulations and change management, issues
RMs know well:

I also addressed the impact of mentors on the job and employing
organization values and culture in a follow up post about records
declassification and digital access to electronic and scanned records in
"Welcoming the Stranger."  This reflects a recent look at digitization and
conservation work areas at the National Archives, among other issues.

I remain very interested in change management, a big part of RIM work, and
welcome thoughts and feedback on it, along the lines of the above links:
assessment of Dr. Evans's pragmatic Obama presidential records essay; the
SAA-shared learning after grad school post; or the essay on working with
stakeholders on classified and electronic records, training employees, and
workplace continuity.  We're all shaped by our personal and professional
experiences and that diverse and often highly individual impact is worth
sharing and hearing.
