The other aspect is to determine if these are truly considered "records" from a records management standpoint. Technically such messages could be treated as transitory and therefore not subject to retention and/or disposition requirements.
Clearly if there is a litigation issues than any and all devices may be subject to data retrieval requests but at least from a day to day perspective there is no active management of these types of data
