I have used Skupsky to develop a retention schedule for a large enterprise and have also looked at Zasio. Fundamentally both of these programs provide a good leg up in developing your retention schedules.

The biggest advantage that we saw was the substantial amount of cost savings in doing the retention research in-house using these tool sets vs engaging a third party or outside counsel (assuming inside counsel has resource/time constraints). The tools focus on citations with records management and therefore narrow down the universe of applicable laws. I found that using the tool really helped in determinig the set of laws that were applicable to the company.

The Skupsky tool has pre-built standard legal groups and standard record series for the most common functions such as accounting, human resources, legal, tax etc and we found that for the most part a good chunk of our record series/types mapped into these standard record series. So within a fairly short period of time, we were able to come up with record series/retention mapping and now only needed to focus on the "delta" i.e. record series that were specific to our company and not part of the "out of the box" set. We than used the legal group index and the legal profile features to identify what additional laws were applicable to us.

All in all it was a good experience using the tool to do retention research.

If there are specific details needed - pls ping me on the e-mail below.
