Alternatives to microfilm (including film and mylar) would be paper &
electronic media.

Microfilm and paper are best for long term retention whereas documents in
electronic formats are best for reference of documents requiring rapid
retreival.
CAR systems were devleoped to speed up the retreival of microfilmed
documents.

Scanners can be as sophisticated as need be (as the budget will allow) to
interact with electronic records management systems.

Check with your local ARMA and AIIM Chapters to see what educational events
are upcoming and of course the AIIM & ARMA Bookstores.

Your application might be, as many are, well suited for mix-media.
