Dear Colleagues,

Based on the question from Randi Kearns on Microfilming Alternatives I need to anser the question with a
question.

WHY?

The Film based Imaging Association FbIA and others may argue that there is no alternative to microfilm for the
long term storage of data e.g. 500 years eye readable as generally quoted.

Can this long term media be integrated with digital imaging systems for general hard documents of A, B, C, D E
sizes? Yes it can. It can also manage Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other electronic files to various microfilm
formats with an analogue output.

I am reliably advised that during the ARMA 2004 event a demonstration was held in the LA area where sound and
a 30 second colour video were played back from a 16mm roll of black and white digial microfilm.

I am also reliably advised that January 2005 is the anticipated release of this capability.

Keep your eyes and ears on alert for a press release in the new year.

Maybe the question should not be, what are the alternatives to microfilm but how can I make use of this long
lasting media to store my analogue and digital data for the oft quoted 500years?

CHANGE OF SUBJECT -

How was the 2004 ARMA event in Long Beach? In one word excellent. Perfect? Mybe not but for a first time
attendee with numerous Australian RMAA Conferences attended since the early 1990's, well done ARMA. There
was not one session I attended that the content was not of major value. I have been known to depart sesions
over the years after 10-15 minutes at other events if the pressentations were not up to scratch, but at ARMA
2004 I had no such need to leave any session attended before the full time allotted. And yes the Keynote
speaker Randy was THE BEST.

Many thanks to all of the Listserv members who made my attaendace to the ARMA 2004 Conference all that more
enjoyable and valuable.

Regards, Laurie Varendorff - currently in Oklahoma City.
