Dear Colleagues,

What a wonderful, helpful, knowledgeable and professional service this
Listserv is for its members.

Classification, Thesauri, Taxonomy or as I posted to this list back on Tue,
27 Jan 2004 22:25:14 +0800 the following post titled:

Taxonomy-thesauri, thesaurus or thesauruses-ontology-functional
thesauri-business
classification schemes-information architecture-metadata-metatags-controlled
vocabularies-naming conventions-facet analysis-spatial data-faceted
classification
system, etc

Can I confess?

I love this stuff!

If I could work with end users, records and archive professionals and
management in organisations and create file classification schemes, all day,
and every day and I would be in heaven on earth.

I have had the fortunate experience of the past several years of being
involved in the facilitation in the creation of functional file [or I prefer
to call them business] classification schemes and thesauri for government
departments in the finance-treasury, education, area redevelopment and
health sectors and it has been the most intellectually engaging and
rewarding experience of my career.

I am encouraged with what I read in respect to the information input on this
thread from Gerry van Houten of the Archives of Ontario. Well done! It will
only get better.

Gerry states in his post:
> We also believe that a functions-based file plan may potentially serve as
the basis for the development of a records retention schedule because it
could allow mapping of retention periods to specific directories and
folders. It should take less time to
write a schedule based on a file plan than doing one from scratch. At a
minimum, the initial investigation and functional analysis of the
organization would not to be done again. <

Gerry, can I advise you that such a software product is here, and available
now!

I used the product in all of the above work since July 2002 with the
classification module of this software and in the past several months a
second interactive Retention and Disposal "R&D" Schedule software product
has been released. I have yet to create a business classification scheme
with the integrated R&D schedule but I look forward to the first one. The
creation of R&D Schedules is not my idea of fun and is nowhere in the same
league as classification. This new software make the process much less hit
and miss and it is all linked and verifiable.

I showed several people the a.k.a. software at the ARMA 2004 Conference in
Long Beach and they appeared to be suitably impressed.

Commercial Interests in the product:

I must advise that I am the sales promotion, support and training
representative for the a.k.a. software here in Western Australia and that is
why I introduced the product to a limited number of individuals at the ARMA
2004 Conference in Long Beach. The goal was to get feedback on the variance
between Australian and North American terminology and processes. We have yet
to receive feedback on this matter. The wording and processes and reports in
a.k.a. may be fine for North America market but as yet we are uncertain
until we get some feedback.

No matter what my personal financial interests are in the product it does
not take away the fact that this software is ground breaking, and I
personally believe world leading in its field. Congratulations go to the
team at Synercon Management Consulting for bring this product to market.

Do not take my word for it, have a look for yourself and download a copy and
play.

The web site is http://www.synercon.com.au/internet/aka_download.htm

Let me know if my belief in the a.k.a. software is warranted.

Regards, Laurie
