Barry,

Your observation begs the question "why isn't more research available within the records management discipline."

Dr. Eugenia Brumm, in her acceptance speech of the Emmett Leahy award (well deserving I might add) in Long Beach, observed that the RM community is not well regarded within academia. With recognition comes research opportunities as well as $$$.

Only a handful of courses in records management are offered at the graduate level and most of these appear to be an afterthought. And as far as I can tell, no RM program exists, not within the U.S. anyway. Yet I believe it is very difficult to teach the complexities and issues of the RM discipline in one class. I'm about to find out in the spring, when I am scheduled to teach a graduate level course.

ARMA has an opportunity to champion this effort. Other professional organizations, such as ALA and the Project Management Institute (PMI), have worked with colleges and universities to create graduate level programs. I know a number of universities that offer master degrees in project management, many of these sponsored by PMI.

Instead of spending $$$ on SIM and the Forrester Report (by the way, what ever became of it) ARMA should be out in front, promoting RM education and working with institutions of higher learning to develop the curriculum for graduate (or even undergraduate) level programs. Then more research opportunities will become available and with it, surveys and data that can help all of us in the profession.

Point taken, BUT if this is the only data available is it better than
nothing? Is there no one out there that has thought enough of this
subject to conduct a validated survey? Did Batman really wear tights?

These any other questions to be answered in the next episode of "As the
Listserv Turns"

this is all good information, but I think most folks on the list have
come to discount the Coopers study as no one has ever seen it. the same
can be said for some of the others, too.

I'm beginning to believe that the Coopers study is an urban RM myth.
