Good Morning All,

Hello to Laurie in AU, Hope the summer days are gorgeous! :)

My question is what has replaced this basic knowledge of the ORGANISATION
and an understanding of good, or poor RM processes and practices where a
chosen few who started employment via the CENTRAL FILE ROOM became CEO's of
these same organizations some years in the future? Not bad odds, as everyone
came through the process surely one of them would make the top position as
in those days recruitment of senior management from external sources was not
the norm, so it was almost 100% likely that the CEO would be home grown.

For the second time, what, IF ANYTHING has replaced this hands on exposure
for the future leaders of the corporate and government world? Has anything?

>> From someone who is still fairly new in Records Management, I have had to educate myself on all that "Records Management" means to a business/corporation. This is only one reason that I am forever grateful that a fellow Records Manager recommended this listserv. My humble response to these questions, would be to look for the opportunities to get the message out wherever you are, and be willing to teach, as sometimes no one else is going to take the initiative. Fortunately, I have been able to work with our Training department, and I teach an Imaging course to all new employees. As we revamp our Records Retention P&P, the content for this course has quickly changed and expanded. It is still only a 'beginning', and there is much more to be done as far as 'awareness' and continued training with corporate accountability is concerned, but at least we have the opportunity to reach new employees as they enter the door, and educate them on just how important their roles are in handling/managing their own company documents/media form types on a daily basis. I agree with all who have been recently emphasizing the importance of making the role of Records Managers/personnel known, and trying to establish our 'voice' through working with IT. It can be frustrating, when not many are really listening. I for one, know just how much can be learned from those of you who are willing to share your expertise, and knowledge. So, if I may offer this as a thank you , and an encouragement to please continue teaching wherever opportunities present themselves.

 On a more curious note:

As a graduate of University of Washington, Seattle, I would also like to know if anyone has spoken with "Uncle Bill", to quote Laurie. :) I know they just opened a brand new IT wing funded by his foundation, and it is beautiful. I wonder how many, if any, Records Management courses may be included in the IT curriculum? Are any Records Management professionals lecturing there?

Sharon??

Best regards to all,
