Tracy Swank asked, "Does anyone have 'centralized shredding' and how do you
get it to work?"

Here at American Honda Motor Co., Inc., it's handled two ways - each core
area of the floors of the main buildings has a medium sized shredder for
daily use like you describe, copies, notes with confidential information,
bad copies. There is also a large rolling bin for larger projects -
outdated brochures, etc. which are emptied daily and brought to the large
shredders here in the Records Management department.

Each associate has a recycling bin at their desk for documents that do not
need to be shredded.

The other way is that the department completes a Records Disposal form
which attests that the records being destroyed are copies or have passed
their retention and notifies us to pick up the records. (The quantity
varies from a handful to several rolling bins full.) Supervised shredding
is available since it is done in the large shredders in Records Management.

Our program is economic because we have partnered with a local social
services agency. They are hired to provide disabled workers to collect the
shredding and recycling, do the shredding and sort the recycling and also
keep the copier paper stocked. The sale of the recycled paper almost pays
for the program. We also avoid the penalties of contributing tons of waste
to landfills. We have won the WRAP award for reducing waste 5 years in a
row.

Good luck!
