Look, most imaging vendors have import tools, but few provide export tools.
Moving the data from one repository to another is not just copying data from
one DB to another. The table layouts will differ, and the internal metadata
in the new system needs to be created.

The product acquired needs to have an open DB, and publish its DB schema.
Plus the image files should be kept in a standard format and locatable, such
as a table column with the path.

Usually you generate input for the new system's import tool from the old
one's db, remapping values as appropriate, and then crank thru things, maybe
even running multiple copies of the import tool in parallel.

No promises. The data structures and functionality may not match. One
place that always get sticky when you do this is maintaining the document
security.

Subject: Imaging systems

I'm working with a group that is looking for an imaging system. Fortunately
they are thinking ahead. One of their primary concerns is that they don't
want to purchase a system that uses a proprietary indexing software. They
want to be able to migrate the index information and the images at some
future date to another system if need be.

I recognize that the data migration would require the data to be normalized,
that data fields match etc.

My concern is what imaging systems out there allow for an easy migration
while others due to the proprietary nature of the software make it more
difficult or impossible to accomplish.

thanks in advance
