The cost to destroy a hard drive by shredding is VERY cheap.  You'll probably be paying less than 1.00 a pound - and most hard drives weigh around than that - maybe a little more.  There will probably be a minimum to shred the drive - so, just have it shredded.  You can only drive so many nails in one day anyway.

And, I've got this mental picture right now of Larry Medina holding a hammer, trying to aim at a nail.  Hammer raised, finger holding the nail, one eye open and one eye closed!  Sweat pouring down his forehead as he is about to release.  Oh well...........

Of course, you'll need to check with your vendor to make sure that they have the proper equipment.

(You don't want them to be driving nails into your head drives - Larry or the vendor!)

Well, this one would be effective and cheap =)

Typically, they are degaussed... especially if you have any desire to
re-use them.  In extreme situations, they are shredded...in industrial
shredders....seriously.

With the price dropping substantially on hard drives, more companies are
removing and destroying them from systems when replacing them now...
especially with he concerns related to privacy issues.
