Dear Colleagues:
I’d like to add some clarification to Hugh Smith’s message about the NFPA
232 issue, so that you can have the maximum impact on the NFPA
deliberations.

The NFPA process establishes a specific time period for members of the
public to make suggested changes to a standard. For NFPA 232, the proposal
stage is open until November 29, 2004. Proposals must be submitted on the
NFPA proposal form, which you can find at
http://www.nfpa.org/assets/files/PDF/docprop.pdf. Proposals need to be
specific in terms of proposed language that relates to the text of the
existing NFPA 232 2000 edition. But, submitting your proposals directly
to NFPA through this process is the best way to get your viewpoint in
front of the entire technical committee.

If Mr. Smith had consulted with ARMA prior to posting his message to the
listserv, we would have suggested this approach.

In addition, ARMA will submit comments and will continue to attend NFPA
232 committee meetings. This is an on-going part of ARMA’s commitment to
influence industry standards.

In this, as in other standards work, ARMA comments are developed through
discussion with the Standards Development Committee, as well as feedback
that is received when we post the opportunities to the membership through
InfoPro Online, Chapter Connection, and the ARMA website.

Sincerely,
Diane Carlisle, CRM
Director of Professional Resources
ARMA International
