Although not records related, many of you have talked of the permanence of
CD's. In ideal situations, they may last 10, 20 or maybe even 50 years. I
have many CD's in my car which I have recorded myself in an effort to
amuse myself in my 90 minute ride to work. I attempt to keep them in their
jewel cases but with 3 teens in the family, that's a stretch. I have
tried to only handle them by their edges and not get dirt or fingerprints
in the playing area. The greater Toronto area has extreme temperatures
from 90 degrees F in the summer to -40 degrees in the winter. This
obviously does not help but the CD's are lasting no more than 6 months
each. All my prerecorded CD's seem to fair far better. Is there a
coating on the prerecorded to make them last longer? Is there something
like a thin wax coating which will increase the life of the disc while at
the same time not damage the workings of the player. Any help would be
helpful.

Thanks in advance
