After the Tsunami,
Keys to Recovery Lie
In Vanished Papers
With Crucial Files Destroyed,
Finding Deposits, Proving
Identity Loom as Ordeals
By ERIC BELLMAN
Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
January 5, 2005; Page A1
HIKKADUWA, Sri Lanka -- As hundreds of people jostle for bags of rice, temporary shelter and
donated clothes outside a government office here, K. Ramachandra has a special mission -- drying
documents. Many, many documents.
Tsunami waves swept through the Hikkaduwa Divisional Secretariat Office on Dec. 26, leaving the
city's most important papers under water for days.
Mr. Ramachandra, a government clerk, is desperately trying to resuscitate them. He's got the paper trail
of many lives spread around the office, and ceiling fans are on full blast. Business permits, marriage
certificates, car registrations and birth certificates -- they all spill from the office and into the blazing sun.

BAGHDAD -- Since the spring of 2003, when front pages all over
the world were filled with alarming images of the looting of the Iraq
National Museum, in Baghdad, relatively little has been heard about
the aftermath of that event, although a limited number of items
have, in fact, been recovered, leaving some 10,000 to 14,000 objects
missing.

Scanning In Your Memories? Go to the Source
By IVAN BERGER
THE best pictures I've shot on film over the years are now as easy to crop, color-correct, enhance,
print, e-mail to friends, post at Web sites and show on my TV as my more recent digital photos.
That's because they now are digital: I've been scanning them into my computer.
It is time-consuming, and the best equipment is not cheap, but the results have more detail and more
nuanced color than if I had shot them digitally. My scanner has brought out color and detail in slides so
overexposed that they barely show an image to the eye, and restored some color to slides that had faded
until only the magenta tones were visible.
