Katrina-I am from New Mexico and we have adopted the NM State Records Retention and Disposition Schedules.  The schedule for ledgers and journals are a six year record after the close of the fiscal year.  Every state has different retentions and I would suggest checking with your state.  Some of our ledgers are kept for ten years as they use them to prepare reports.
