Larry that was a great delineation and I hope you don't mid that I use
this as part of a discussion for my clients.  As for the cubic foot
displacement, as a records center we do look at it as a 1.2, and rates
would be based on total cubic feet x's the c.f. rate.  That total cost
divided by 1.2 would give you a box/carton rate.

Also keep in mind what the type of cartons you want to use.  Rarely to
never accessed records can be stored using econo-storage cartons,
(depending on records center policy and your comfort level) often
accessed records might need a more durable carton and that can cost you
2X's as much per carton, but last 3 or 4 times as long, or even drive
the records center to using an open file system instead of boxing.

First, what WE as RMs refer to as a standard box at 1.1 ft3, commercial
records storage companies (almost across the board) refer to as 1.2 or
1.3
ft3, and this is what they bill you to store them.  Their "reasoning" is
that the footprint of the box, including allowance for overhang of the
cover on all four sides, is somewhere between 1.2 and 1.3 ft3...
