Many of the state archives have helpful advice on disaster response for both
institutions and individuals. In the wake of Katrina, we've gathered some
of the most immediately useful at
http://www.coshrc.org/arc/hurricanerecovery.htm. There is also a more
comprehensive page at http://www.coshrc.org/arc/states/res_disa.htm#salvage.
For individuals and families, some of the most accessible advice may be from
the Minnesota Historical Society which provides instructions for salvaging a
wide range of historical materials and artifacts at
http://www.mnhs.org/preserve/conservation/emergency.html.
All repositories, museums, libraries, and other cultural institutions should
also be aware of the resource directory provided by the Heritage Emergency
National Task Force at
http://www.heritagepreservation.org/PROGRAMS/Katrina.HTM. This page
includes a link to the Emergency Response and Salvage Wheel referred to in
another posting.
