Baked is ok for archival storage. It does have the proven lifespan (not in
Seattle but elsewhere) I think what work better in our distributed
management matrix is more along the lines of the Voyager disks. Of course
there is the added problems expense. Gold platters don't come cheap. The
space capsule and launch system could be tricky (maybe Paul Allen could help
us out). But think of how long it will laast and how big out network cold
eventually last. Of course we will have to test it. I can think of a whole
list of managers and several politicians that I would like to send on that
junket.

Chris Flynn;
P.S. Larry lighten up or you could make the list :)

Sorry, Bill, the "only completely proven media for record storage" is NOT
cave walls, but baked clay tablets (MUST be baked, not sun-dried).

I propose a new technology : Computer Output to Baked Clay Tablet. Let's
start creating some International Standards for the medium ...	;-)

Also, assuming by "cave walls" you refer to the paintings on the walls of
various European caves, those are considerably more than a few thousand
years old (recent radiocarbon dating yields 13,000 to 15,000 years for
Altamira, Spain).

Best regards,

Fred.

I don't recommend them, I recommend film. However, I just couldn't resist
the chance to point out that film LE is as much an estimate as CD LE. And,
as I have said before, the only completely proven media for record storage
is cave walls, and they only go back a few thousand years.
