There is always a trade-off in the accessibility of information vs its
security. The risk of damage because of loss or corruption obviously
correlates directly to the level of secure procedures implemented. These
are almost always mitigated by time requirements. So, important
information requiring fast access should be on systems that provide just
that, and be restricted accordingly.

There is a tendency to hype the dangers of any convenient technology,
but note that the one respondent said he stored his hacking tools on his
USB device. Well, I'd imagine that after he accessed a target system, he
no longer had need of the tools on the device, anymore. : ^ )

Point being, if the information is critical, it needs treated as such.
And DR and following good backup procedures go a long way toward
minimizing the damage from loss due to unauthorized access.

Hi all -- An interesting article.

IT managers ignore removable media risk

A new survey is showing that the majority of IT professionals use
non-encrypted removable media to store sensitive data, unaware of the
dangers
