I have recently experienced bounced back e-mails that I sent to individuals
in corporations when their internal e-mail filters detected an SS# in an
e-mail attachment. The attachment was a requested standard IRS Tax Form 1009
(in which an SS# is required) that I had scanned into a PDF file image. The
e-mail bounced back to me said that the e-mail I sent could not enter their
e-mail system, because it had an SS# or other personally identifiable
information.

It would be ironic if SS#s are so sensitive that we might be reduced to
slower paper-based work processes in some instances, simply because of the
difficulty of having our privacy/security issues addressed in a high tech
environment!

and worse yet the SSN was not supposed to be used as an identifier.
This was written into the law. I wonder when it changed. For all the
arguments proposed against a national ID card by the left, right and center
I have yet to see any argument or discussion from those groups calling for
the rescission of the SSN as a national ID. And if you don't think that it
is being used as a national ID then ask yourself why there is a push to have
parents apply for a SSN for a newborn.

Hopefully the heightened awareness about identity theft and the role played

the SSN is collected and used.
