A final comment on the "Iron Curtain" thread. One very unfortunate
proviso in the Yalta agreements was the requirement that refugees and
German troops who surrendered to Western Allied forces within the
agreed-on Soviet zone of occupation should be handed back to the Red
Army. For scores of thousands of German soldiers, this was especially
egregious; they were left to languish in Soviet POW camps for as long as
ten years. Those who survived were not released until the fall of 1955.
