Does anyone on the listserve have a story to tell about success with
efforts to limit either the numbers of records series that they have?
OR success in establishing a limited set of retention time periods? I'd
love to hear about it.
One of my "pet theories" that goes back a decade or so, is that it would
be great if we could establish government sanctioned retention periods
in a limited set for any records where there was a legitimate retention
need. That could greatly simplify legal research and further force
decisions by federal agencies to specify retention requirements. We do
have the 3-year default provision at the federal level, and I think in
five U.S. states as well, but I don't believe that we've gone much
beyond that limited help for Records Managers and for their employers
just yet.
