Patty:
We rotate our tapes by reusing them when the temporary retention is up.
Most of the tapes are kept 2 weeks at the most before being reused.
Some are kept a month, a quarter, or a year before being reused. After
a predetermined number of reuses (I'm not sure what the number is) they
are destroyed by shredding.

Subject: [RM] Best practices for back-up tape destruction

Right now my company is reviewing and revising our processes for back-up
tape destruction, specifically for emails. We are between the options of
completely destroying the tapes, or simply wiping them clean. Although
complete destruction of the tapes makes the most sense, there is a cost
concern with the IT department. We are trying to determine the best
practice for destruction based on what other companies are doing to make
a final decision. Could anyone tell me what their company's policy is?
Has anyone encountered similar situations? What was the outcome?

Thanks.

Patty
