Blake, just an idea about "mandatory": In planning for mandatory email
training, our training manager pointed out that, in fact, mandatory
training is not as effective as voluntary training offered on a training
calendar. I didn't agree, at the time, quite frankly. However, we
conducted an email survey last September which canvassed a random
selection of 10% of our employees. Not only was the response
overwhelming (perhaps a sign of how people feel about this issue), but
the results tended to confirm what our training guru said: On elements
of email that had been trained in a voluntary fashion - generally
appropriate use and software tools training - evidence was that in fact
the majority of respondents "got it". We didn't have any mandatory
trained issues to look at for comparison purposes, but I have to admit
that I was impressed. The results appeared to confirm what our training
manager had said. His point, BTW, is that people are more engaged when
the training is voluntary; mandatory training tends to go in one ear and
out the other.
