I have to second Larry's recommendation for the Santa Cruz boardwalk and the Big Dipper.  I grew up in the Bay Area, with many years in SJ.  When I saw your query, the first thing that come to mind was the boardwalk.  Plus, the drive to Santa Cruz is GORGEOUS (and twisty!).

I lived 5 mins from the Winchester Mystery House - and again second Larry ... an interesting visit but not worth missing the other points mentioned.

And if you make it to Monterrey and are a Steinbeck fan, be sure to tour his home and see some of the sights written about in Cannery Row and East of Eden!
