Hey Glen - as tempting as is option 3, option 1 works best, hands down.  The first day I'm gone there are five "burning platforms," but by the next day, three have resolved themselves quite well without me, which is a healthy reminder of one's dispensability!  If I start at the top, I don't fight fires that are already out.

Vacations are meant to refresh yourself so that means no work communication.  When back in the office what do you do about emails?

Start at the top and work down?

Start on the day you left and work up?

Or just delete them all and if it is important they will get back to you?
