Regarding law firms developing records management practice areas, I
disagree somewhat with John, as I see this is an up-and-coming trend. I
recently did some research into this on law firm web sites and found at
least three large firms advertising their expertise in providing RM
advice to clients. The following paragraph is taken from an article I
just completed for a law library-related publication entitled Practice
Innovations:

"Some firms market RM expertise under the umbrella of privacy and
information management. For example, the Hunton & Williams Privacy and
Information Management Practice Group advertises 'strategic business
consulting on all aspects of information policy, including privacy,
information security and records management.' The approach of Reed
Smith's Records Management and E-Discovery Group is to focus on
electronic records management strategies. Blackwell Sanders Peper
Martin takes this concept a step further. Its Records & Information
Management program, run by a partner whose practice focuses 'on a single
issue of central importance to companies today - how best to manage
company records and electronic data,' offers legal services in creating
and validating records retention policies and schedules, RM compliance
systems, legal hold strategies, and electronic records risk management."

Re large law firms and records management practice groups, my guess is
that without a large infusion of new talent, most law firms are not
well-positioned to be rendering advice on records management matters.
There are, to be sure, legal issues, but sound advice on them requires
knowledge of many things -- information management principles,
technology issues, basic things like filing systems, etc. -- that most
lawyers simply do not have.
