Deputy State Archivist

The State Archives and Records Program, a work unit within the Public
Trust Division of the State Historical Society of Iowa, looks to hire an
energetic, enthusiastic, creative and innovative Deputy State Archivist.


Working in close coordination with the Division Administrator (State
Archivist), the Deputy State Archivist will provide day-to-day guidance
and leadership to the Iowa State Archives and Records Program.  The
Deputy State Archivist is expected to provide creative, innovative
leadership to the program as it works to increase public visibility of
and appreciation for the states documentary heritage; to enhance
government agency efficiency through an active records management
program; to address the issues of electronic records management and
preservation; and to promote an active state archival program to
preserve, protect and make government records having enduring value
available for public use.  The Deputy State Archivist will manage the
State Archives of Iowa and the State Records Center.
The Deputy State Archivist will provide administrative support and
guidance to the State Records Commission and will assist the State
Archivist in coordinating the work of the Iowa Historical Records
Advisory Board.

The Deputy State Archivist is expected to operate in an entrepreneurial
manner - relentlessly focusing on and continuously innovating to benefit
the customer; to represent the agency both within and outside the
organization; to adjust to change, work pressures or difficult
situations without undue stress; and to possess a strong knowledge of
the archival and records management principles, theories, trends and
current research.

This is a full time (M -F, 8:00 a.m. -  4:30 p.m.), permanent position
in Des Moines, Iowa, with full State of Iowa benefits.  This position
requires some travel.  The position is classified as "State Archivist"
with a pay range of $42,203 - $63,876.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

This position requires experience with, and appreciation for, the
management of government records; knowledge of records management and
archival principles; and acquaintance with issues related to electronic
records management and preservation.  
Graduation from an accredited  college or university with major
coursework in archival science, public administration, political
science, library science, history, government, historic preservation and
experience equal to two years of full-time work as an archivist; OR, a
Master's degree from an accredited college or university with a major
coursework in archival science, public administration, political
science, library science, history, government, historic preservation and
experience equal to one year of full-time work as an archivist; OR, an
equivalent combination of experience and education substituting  one
year of the required experience for each 30 semester hours or one year
of the required education to a maximum substitution of four years.
