>>A 99.99% success rate by a storage vendor is going to mean beans to a
mid-size company that loses its contingency backup, is not told it is
missing, and then suffers a catastrophic event. <<

I must of missed the part of the story where it said that IM did not
tell its clients that the tapes were missing. None of the articles I
read on the subject made that implication.

An organization I worked with years ago misplaced our backups and let us
know right away. We generated a new set and sent them off to storage
(with the same vendor). The original tapes showed up in a couple of
days. Our IT staff didn't think it was a real big deal. They were in
the midst of some major computer upgrades and had rolled back the system
a number of times.

I am a bit curious about a disaster recovery program that places all of
its eggs in a single backup basket. The organizations I am familiar
with have multiple sets of backups. The loss of all would be
catastrophic. The loss of a single days tapes would be a bit painful.
In my mind, if the loss of a single set of backup tapes has catastrophic
implications for the organization, they need to rethink their business
resumption strategy.

From my experience, the bigger issue is the loss of personal
information, not the loss of a single set of backup tapes.
