The flippant answer would be to ask the CEO, "Do you look good in
orange jump suits?" But that, I'm afraid, would tend to be
career-limiting. I suppose that it could open dialogue, but that
dialogue might be an exit interview.

Maybe another approach would be: "Would you be open to considering --
and then fully sponsoring -- a project proposal that would reduce the
cost of information storage across the company, enhance our regulatory
compliance, and reduce our potential for losses during product
liability litigation?" Having asked that, you better have a proposal in
your back pocket that outlines the current costs and risks and what it
will take to put in a compliant records program.

The trick is to know what engages management. What are their hot
buttons right now? If you can legitimately solve business problems,
then you can ask a question like that.
