No more hard-copy government files are to be destroyed by city employees
until the Tracy City Council revises a policy that led to the destruction of
thousands of city documents and e-mails, some of which could have been used
as evidence in a lawsuit, the council decided Tuesday.

Attorney Mark Connolly said the council approved what he called a "document
destruction policy" on Jan. 16 — a week after the Tracy Press requested city
documents and e-mails related to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's
nearby proposed biological laboratory and explosives tests.

City spokesman Matt Robinson said Friday that no records were destroyed
under the new policy that would have been provided to the Press because of
its records request. Under state law, the city had two weeks to provide all
documents related to the request.
