Not sure if any of you have you considered this but San Jose actually has a really nice smaller airport that could be less expensive to fly into. I used to live in San Jose and its only an hour away from San Francisco if you don't arrive during rush hour times. I think that BART is accessible from the airport or you can still rent a car for minimal. So much less hassle than SFO or Oakland and you can sight see on the way up too.

If you are in San Fran and a food network fan there is the Terminal Market Building by Fisherman's Wharf that has some really neat shops and good food. Baccalone being one of them. Fisherman's Wharf is also fun, the seals are a must see and the walk along the Pier is nice. Also you have to have Cioppino and Dungeness crab from the street vendors at the other end of the strip. If you don't have a lot of time do a bus trip, you'll get some great pictures and the drivers give you a lot of local history. Also if you can do the duck tour, it's actually warmer in Nov. than it is in the spring.

So since I live here I thought I'd add some more places outside of San Fran for anyone that wants to take an extended stay and see more of California. It is worth taking an extra few days and seeing some of the area. Some suggestions within a few hours of drive time are below:

If you rent a car after conference, there is Half Moon Bay just outside of San Fran with some really nice coastal ocean views. There is a Ritz Carlton that does a very nice afternoon tea for an affordable price and the best ocean views.

Salsalido across the Golden Gate Bridge is nice, the architecture is outstanding. John Muir National Park has some great examples of the giant redwoods and is really close by.

San Jose has the Egyptian Mummy Museum and lots of concerts and events going on all of the time at the HP Pavilion.

Monterey is about 2 1/2 to 3 hours south of San Fran. This is where Pebble Beach and 17 mile drive is and some of the most beautiful sights ever, anywhere.

Sacramento is only about 2 1/2 hours max away from San Fran so you have the Capital.

Napa/Sonoma is also about 2 hours away, lots and lots to do here. St. Helena is a great town and V. Satui is a great winery with an unbelievable cheese section at a fraction of the cost from Dean & Deluca across the street. Don't listen to Larry, Napa is great any time of year so don't let a few fallen leaves deter you :). If you like food you need to go to Bouchon and/or the Bouchon Bakery since French Laundry is booked in advance. Mustards is also good without breaking the bank.

If you head up near Tahoe only about 3 to 4 hours away there are also a million little good wineries near Placerville (on the way to South Shore) off Highway 50. The Chamber of Commerce has maps that you could get online. Plus its off season and better values. Then there is Tahoe itself with Casinos and great golf and hiking areas. And yes there could be snow, so if you like to ski head this way.

If you're up near Tahoe where I live let me know. I'm 8 miles from the base of the Sierras. I'll be more than happy to show you the area.

I hope that everyone has a great time at conference and even more fun after!! See you there. All the best -ink
