It must be a sign of the times -- New Jersey apparently has passed a law that deems any unredeemed store gift cards to be abandoned property that may in certain circumstances need to be turned over to the state. The law requires that firms have or develop a system of collecting zip code information from purchasers.  Naturally there is litigation surrounding this.
