It depends on the type of organization and software. External, licensed software is typically treated as a commodity and managed as a tool, retained as long needed to support company business needs.
Internally developed software has IP value and information regarding design, development, maintenance and use of the software, including code, are maintained as IP records. The records are critical for establishing IP rights for the company.
The information is also critical for protection of the company when others claim infringement of their IP. Retained code can show prior use or simultaneous development of the technology being claimed as IP. Failure to retain the information properly can result in considerable risk or unnecessary expense to the organization.
