*Permanent Alaska State Records Can be Stored on a Regional Digital Utility*

The Alaska Department of Law advised State Archivist Dean Dawson that
permanent electronic public records may be stored at the *Washington State
Digital Archives* provided certain conditions are met. In an October 10,
2011 *Attorney General Opinion*, Alan Birnbaum, Chief Assistant Attorney
General for Information *&* Project Support said:****

** **

**· **The State Archivist may store digital records at EWU’s digital
facility as long as *State Records Management Act* [AS 40.21.010-150]
requirements are met.****

** **

**· **Storing permanent digital records presents the State Archives with
substantial challenges, due to extraordinary numbers of records, technical
costs and frequent updating to keep records accessible.****

** **

**· **The State of Alaska will realize substantial cost savings by
partnering with the *Washington State Digital Archives*.****

** **

**· **The *Records Management Act* doesn’t expressly require the State
Archivist to retain physical custody of permanent State Records or store the
records in Alaska.****

** **

The complete version *is *posted on the State Archives web site at the link
