I thought this chart was pretty interesting...
Business Email 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014
Avg. # of Emails Sent/Received per User/Day
110 112 115 117 119
Average Number of Emails Received
74 75 77 79 80
Average Number of Legitimate Emails
61 62 63 65 65
Average Number of Spam Emails
13 13 14 14 15
Average Number of Emails Sent
36 37 38 38 39
I've been tracking my business email volume since 2008 and I'd guess in
part, volume depends on your role in your organization and the industry
sector you're in. Also my spam volume has dropped significantly since I
started using my filter more aggressively AND my "non-legitimate' emails
have dropped since I started asking to be unsubscribed from senders.
What the chart above seems to not address is the email you receive that
isn't 'legitimate business email' or 'spam'- on an average day, I receive a
large volume that doesn't count as 'business email' that isn't 'spam', and I
receive a small volume of personal email.
2008 2009 2010 first half 2011
(Avg per day)
Total Email Received 166 202 213 211
Legit Business 23 25 26 24
Non-Business 127 161 169 167
Spam 11 9 7 7
Other 5 7 11 13
What I refer to as "legit business" is email that has a retention period
exceeding 180 days (non-transitory in nature) and either has to be acted on
or retained as a record. "Non-Business" includes listserv posts,
subscriptions, news and RSS feeds, and other similar content. My average
number of sent per day is 44; 38 of which are business. These numbers are
ONLY my work email account, they do not include any web based non-work
accounts.
I really question the data indicating that 55-68% of the total email
received in a day are actual "legitimate business email"- my numbers are
always between 10-15%. AND of that, less than 3% of the total has a
retention period that exceeds 2 years.
Unless your organization has a strict policy that NO NON-WORK RELATED EMAIL
is to be received at your work email address, meaning you don't sign up for
or request information to be sent to you from news feeds, other
organizations for information or reference, publications or other sources,
it's hard to understand these numbers. If that were the case for me, my
'non-business' number would probably be 50-60% lower and my total would be
closer to the numbers in the chart.
