Inspector general faults SEC in probe of document shredding - The
Washington Post

The SEC<http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/sec-under-schapiro-struggles-to-turn-around-amid-political-financial-head-winds/2011/09/19/gIQACYnxTL_story.html>,
which is responsible for policing Wall Street, destroyed internal
documents<http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/sec-accused-of-dumping-records/2011/08/17/gIQAKxF7LJ_story.html>that
should have been preserved as official federal records, the agency’s
inspector general has found.

The SEC also withheld important information about the practice from the
National Archives<http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/a-different-story-emerges-on-sec-record-purges/2011/09/02/gIQALBh44J_story.html>,
according to the inspector general. The Archives oversees the preservation
of federal records and last year asked the Securities and Exchange
Commission to address an allegation that the SEC had destroyed documents
without authorization.
