Todd--
pH neutral or buffered boxes and folders will certainly keep the papers
from decaying, but to a point. If you have highly acidic paper, such as
newsprint or blueprints, the decay can be slowed and contained but not
really stopped. If most of your paper records are not of the newsprint or
blueprint variety, then the pH neutral option will be worthwhile. Another
major factor to consider is the environment where the boxes will be kept.
You'll also need climate control, usually about 50F and 50% relative
humidity, or at least a space where temp and humidity stay constant.
Paige #15 boxes are very excellent. Metal Edge also makes quality document
cases and completely seal the documents inside. The latter is better if
you have vermin in your storage area since there are no hand holes which
can allow for silverfish, bugs etc, to move from box to box. And if there
are vermin already in the files, they are stuck in the box, and will die
there.
