The list has proved an invaluable resource over the years. Thank you to everyone for taking the time to respond. Your perspectives are appreciated.

My thinking on the subject (right now anyway) is that when time and resources are at a premium, it can provide an alternative to a formal records survey provided the organization is comfortable with the risk it poses. It would also allow them to focus more of their resources on areas that represent a higher degree of risk - essentially freeing up time and energy to devote to a formal survey in those areas.

If there are significant drawbacks my ears are open. I'm concerned about exceeding current resources and would like to provide options.

To Larry - It's the former with a significant time constraint.

To Fred - You can stand under the umbrella with me.
