In addition, the "illustrative" approach can also help you capture opportunities for process improvement (we call them "red clouds"), identify vital records, and rank risks associated with records and information management activities.
I always use the process driven approach and have found the more traditional records inventory approaches to be largely ineffective.
Another help that is often overlooked is to contact your risk management or internal audit department to obtain a list of their highest ranked risks....and then review the records associated with that process. You can add a lot of value by remediating risks in the processes that carry the most risks.
