Sasha commented "... very often I hear from people that "Photoshop" can do all corrections with Records and condition of Original is not important any more."
While PhotoShop (and its equivalents, such as GIMP) is indeed a powerful and valuable application, NOTHING compares to having a good-quality/good-condition original (however you may define "good-quality/good-condition" -- and there are many ways to define it).
Image-by-image PhotoShopping is incredibly labour-intensive (and you need really skilled labour=expensive), time-consuming, and it can be very subjective in the judgments made in the process. Truly the old Italian saying applies: "traduttore, traditore!" (translator, you are a traitor).
Sometimes you just have no choice, and you do the best you can with the originals you have, using the available staff, techniques and technology. Did I mention LOTS of money?
For an example of such, see Reviel Netz and William Noel, "The Archimedes Codex", Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 2007. If you can't get the book (or don't have the time), see the Wikipedia article at the URL http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archimedes_Palimpsest
But it's never as good as a good original.
Best regards,
Fred
