“It’s Dead, Jim”: Resurrecting an Obsolete File, Part 2 « The Signal:
Digital Preservation

In part 1 of this
story<http://blogs.loc.gov/digitalpreservation/2011/12/it%E2%80%99s-dead-jim-resurrecting-an-obsolete-file-part-1/>,
I described the difficulty of accessing a commercial CD-ROM published in
1989. Eventually, out of frustration, I questioned its value and wondered
who actually cared about outdated software. So I consulted some colleagues.

It turns out that some gamers care, especially those who are fanatical
about the original look and feel of favorite old
games<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_video_games>.
Many are dedicated enough to build their own
emulators<http://www.vg-network.com/>in order to continue playing the
games.
