Nolene:
A successful RIM program needs executive support complete with
responsibilities and accountabilies specified in the governance statement
(policy).
We have been engaged with a client for over 2 years that started with a
0-rated RIM program and is now well on its way to being a recognized
industry leader.
A major factor to our success is that the steering committee includes 7 of
the company's 9 vice presidents.

Our Steering Committee is the consensus group for RIM policy. While I
draft policy and procedures for our various RIM responsibilities,
including legislative and regulatory compliance, the SC reviews it from
the perspective of their various division or operational functions. We
meet at least quarterly, and the SC members are encouraged to bring RIM
issues from their operational functions for discussion.

Several RM best practices sources say that a RM program should have a
"Steering Committee." I am trying to choose the appropriate people to be
on ours, and would have representatives from IT, Legal, Finance,
Compliance, and an operations person from each of our major lines of
business. But I was wondering, other than conducting an annual (or
whatever period we choose) review of our retention schedule and policy,
what else, if anything, would they do?
